Dr. Watkins is currently Senior Medical Director for Community Care of North Carolina and Co-Chair of CCNC’s Dyad Team. In these positions, he works with practices throughout the State of NC and supports CCPN’s QIPS (Quality Improvement and Practice Support) team. In addition, he helps support the company’s educational and quality improvement efforts. He was the first MD in the US to become a PCMH Certified Content Expert. He is also a member of MINT (the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers).
Dr. Watkins has over 35 years of clinical experience – spanning academics, corporate, and private practice medicine and has held leadership roles in numerous professional organizations and is a former NCAFP Past-President and Board Chair. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has spoken nationally and internationally on a wide range of subjects. Dr. Watkins is currently serving his third term as an AAFP-appointed Director on the COLA Board of Directors and has served on the CDC’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC). He is also in his second term as Chairman of the Board of High-Country Community Health – an FQHC in Boone, NC where he is the founding Medical Director.
Dr. Watkins lives outside Asheville, NC with his wife Dr. Elizabeth Graves and their two rescue pups. Their grown daughters and two granddaughters live in the Triad.
